Dylan
The parking lot was full. Dylan sat in his seat staring at the entrance to the temple that his father had dragged them to what had felt like once a week. Dylan later realized that they only visited when the family business was facing hard times, which during its inception had been frequently. Here they sat, in his parents’ sedan, not actually in the temple parking lot but on the road that ran along it. They had been forced to double park, since there were no spots available in the parking area. It felt as if all the traffic that should have been on the road was here.
In all the end of the world movies he had seen, the roads had been jammed with cars, with people desperately trying to seek shelter any place they could. Despite this, traffic had been relatively light, the roads had been mostly deserted. He didn’t know if that was simply due to people sheltering in place or something more sinister, but as he sat here staring out the window at the menagerie of vehicles crowding the temple his family frequented, he found himself seeing things in a darker light.
“Drone doesn’t show anyone outside keeping watch, not even at the gate house,” Nguyen said.
Dylan nodded. The soldier didn’t have to explain why that was a problem. Even those that were untrained in military tactics understood that you wanted to see threats before they arrived at your door. The lack of any type of reception or security force, thrown together or not, made his mood yet another shade darker.
His contacts were still generating a silhouette in yellow of where the other family vehicles were located in the parking lot. He could see how his mother’s SUV had been forced to park two rows behind his sister’s roadster, but was able to park next to his oldest brother, Ainesh’s heavy duty pickup truck. He couldn’t actually see through the vehicles that blocked his vision, but the yellow lines made it simple enough to know their location. He had already used his bluetooth connection to access their onboard computers. The family codes made it easy enough. They had arrived four and a half hours earlier.
Every fiber of his being, every cell and synapse screamed at him to access the local wireless network, to call his mother and wash away the fear and darkness that was all that he could experience at this moment. He understood though, that if they weren’t in danger, if he was just overreacting that accessing the network and contacting his family would place a digital target on them for whomever was trying to kill him.
Nguyen cleared his throat and asked, “Sure you want to do this?”
Dylan didn’t answer. He just opened the door, placing the fallen soldier’s helmet on his head with its face-obscuring visor pulled down and walked toward the temple.
Dylan crossed the grassy break in between the curb and the parking lot until he came to the wrought iron fence that controlled access onto the temple grounds.
